Anime Corner: Soul Eater

One of my very favourite anime, Soul Eater is full of everything you could ever want from an anime. Action, laughs and great music.

741-1So the premise is simple but a bit odd. There are humans with the ability to transform into Weapons (inspired, isn’t it?) and they attend a school known as the Death Weapon Meister Academy. There, they partner with a Meister who learns to weild both them and special magic Soul abilities. The jobs of the students are to collect 99 Kishin Eggs/Souls (plus one Witch’s Soul) and feed them to their weapons to turn them into a Death Scythe. Said Death Scythe is, as you may have guessed, a weapon capable of massive destruction and awesomeness.

The story starts with Maka and her Meister Soul, who turns into a scythe. The first three episodes of the anime follow an almost Monster of the Week format, where we are introduced to Maka, then Death the Kid and his twin Weapons. The thrid focuses on Black*Star. All three character sets are powerful in their own right, but due to various mistakes, accidents and mishaps they never seem to collect any Kishin Souls, meaning they’re bottom of the class despite being incredibly good fighters and students.

medusaThe story then takes a twist for the dark with a rather generic Save the World plot, but this bare-bones plot is actually great as it gives the characters plenty of room to be awesome. And boy are they awesome. Maka gets points for using an otherwise unwieldy scythe, and my only real disappointment among the cast is the Naruto-like Black*Star, whose constant “all about me” attitude really grates after the first few minutes. Death the Kid’s obsession with symmetry and balance bites him in the ass quite a few times, and whilst initially getting a laugh now and again, is kind of annoying. All the characters have their quirks but arguably the stand-out performance goes to Excalibur. Despite being a Weapon of unparalleled power, Excalibur is… well, fucking annoying. That’s one character who has to be seen to be believed. On a lesser note I found Maka to be a rather annoying protagonist.

Graphically this series is very consistent, and is very very good. Studio Bones do some genuinely top-notch animation and this is arguably one of their better works. Sound-wise… honestly I love it. I mean just listen to this opening!

Even the characters dance to it. Honestly this probably is my favourite opening song to an anime. Everything about it is awesome!

If you haven’t watched Soul Eater and are an anime fan, you owe it to yourself to give this show a watch. Best anime ever? No. One of the most awesome anime ever? Most definitely.

My Picks for Smash Bros: King K. Rool.

KroolSplash

You know him well, he’s finally back, to kick some Kong!
King K. Rool is the leader of the Kremlings and Donkey Kong’s arch-nemesis. I was initially going to pick Dixie Kong but figure that we could do with a few extra villains.
King K. Rool would fit in with the other Heavyweights, such as Bowser and Ganondorf. He’s not quite up there with those guys though, so maybe he’s of a similar rank to Dedede on the baddy scale.
But what about his attacks? Mercifully there are a ton of references for attacks. Donkey Kong 64 has K. Rool donning boxing gloves to attack the Kongs, belly flopping to attack from above and so on.

His appearances in the Country series also highlight some of his more versatile options. His gun from DK2 could be used as a Down Special for a long-range shot with an angle. His Upwards Special could make use of his gadgeteering abilities from Country 3, with the helicopter pack from his Roolenstein persona.

KKroolBarreling K. Rool’s other major abilities mostly involve his size. For standard attacks and moves, K Rool’s boxing abilities could make him a heavyweight imitation of Little Mac. Though maybe he doesn’t have the multi jab.

His Smash attacks are actually fairly easy. His side Smash could easily be a powerful lunge or bull-like charge attack. His down Smash would simply be a slam of both fists down on either side. For an Up Smash, maybe some kind of uppercut?

Another interesting idea is that his crown can be used as a projectile; maybe he can throw this or swing it as part of an aerial attack.

Overall, King K. Rool feels like a character with a lot of potential. Fingers crossed he gets in next time!

Thinking Out Loud: I found a decent Star Fox Boss!

So recently, I finished off my first play through of Kirby: Planet Robobot and one part of the game really stuck out to me… The final boss.

Star Dream 1

This is how Kirby barrel rolls…

I mean mostly of the main Story Mode. The final boss is Star Dream, a bizarrely powerful computer that floats in space. No really. But what makes this Boss so memorable is the whole thing plays like a Star Fox game would. Right down to a Barrel Roll!

It’s kind of hard to explain why it seems to work better. It’s not amazingly complex like Star Fox. Besides movement there are three other buttons used; B is used for you generic laser, A is used for the “missiles” you get, and either shoulder button will barrel roll.

The barrel roll lasts a short time and usually manages to deflect entire arrays of fire. Every now and again Star Dream fires objects that can be blasted to bits. Doing so turns it into debris that can be collected and converted into the Planet Buster missiles; fired with A.

Star Dream 2

So yeah, it’s not complex on the controls. Yet Star Dream’s wide plethora of attacks and it’s constant warping make it a challenge to keep up. But then you beat the boss and this happens.

Star Dream 3It pulls up a part of the giant enemy spacecraft from earlier in the game. The fight continues though admittedly again it’s only a bit more challenging. You have to blast that grey ball to bits. Or at least the cover of it. Then things go from more challenging to batshit bonkers.

Star Dream 4

Yeah, it becomes a giant, cat-faced stopwatch. It releases numbers at first and after each one it summons some random object to attack you with, ranging from an electric torch to a pair of compass.

It’s weird but I actually enjoyed this section – despite having an aching thumb – far more then I did most of the Star Fox levels. Am I about to say that this one level was better then Star Fox 64? No. Is it better then Star Fox Zero? Yes but no. I’m not about to state that I’d rather play this one level over another entire game, but I had actual fun with this. Star Dream’s battle reminded me greatly of the best moments from Star Fox 64 (particularly Area 6) and in my mind has outshone many of Zero’s levels.

Considering the simpler controls, more emphasis on dodging and blasting, the level flows very elegantly. There’s no looking around or locking on to try and figure out where the enemy is, no constant flipping over to sneak behind an enemy. This was really fun and I wouldn’t mind seeing HAL Laboratory make a shooter using these mechanics.

It’s a weird moment in my life when I found Kirby out-Star Foxing Star Fox!

My Picks for Smash Bros – Introduction

Smash Bros is done for this generation, yes, I know. It’s sad.

However, if there’s one thing most players will agree on, is that new characters are only ever a good thing. Unless it’s Dr. Mario. Or Pink Gold Peach. Or Baby Rosalina.

So with that in mind, I decided to write a series of articles based on what characters I’d like to see in a new Smash Bros.

Each article will go up on a Monday, since everyone needs something to cheer them up, and I’ll drop hints as to which character is coming the following week. Check in on Tuesdays if you’re interested. There’s around 15 articles to get through so this feature is sticking around for quite some time.

To kick us off, I’m going to start with a character who was pretty popular in the Polls. He’s scaly, green and rotund. See you next week for the first one!

Thinking Out Loud: Colour Splash

Ok so I was writing a long article about how much I hate and am offended by Colour Splash.

Then I realised I wasn’t actually giving it a chance and explaining why I can’t stand it. So here’s the list.

The Toads

Source: Here

In Thousand-Yeard Door the Toads came in a variety of shapes and colours and even gender. You could tell what kind of character they were and whether or not they were integral to the story.

Then Sticker Star and Paper Jam Bros arrived and… yeah. Suddenly the Toads  were all the same shape, all the same colour and all the same gender.

I can pretty much guarantee what happened. A certain fellow who’s name rhymes with “Mia Mode O” walking in and too them to knock the big stories on the head. And since there’s no real story to Sticker Star, the Toad’s weren’t needed to have distinct personalities.

Which just goes back to my nod-worn out view that Miyamoto’s starting to lose sight or something. He’s becoming the George Lucas of gaming. Two of the games this year, Pokemon and Zelda, haven’t got him anywhere near them. And I genuinely am looking forward to both games.

The Plotline is as thing as Paper Mario himself

paper-mario-color-splash

The visuals are great. Shame about everything else.

I actually love this in an ironic hatred kind of way. There’s a huge mystery scene at the beginning of Colour Splash where Peach and Toad approach Mario’s house. They unfurl a letter which turns out to be a Colourless Toad.

This is where my entertainment stopped, mostly because the Toad is indistinguishable from the all the other ones, see the above. It’s not even a secret that Bowser’s the main villain this time. The Koopalings have been confirmed to appear as major bosses. Whilst this would be fine I can’t help but feel this is a dull way to go about it. Thousand-Year Door had memorable Bosses in the form of Grodus, the Shadow Sirens and the immortal Rawk Hawk.

Honestly, why are we still having Princess kidnapping plots in a Mario RPG? Whilst this hasn’t been confirmed to be the case I will be legitimately shocked if Bowser doesn’t kidnap Peach.

They won’t make a Paper Mario RPG ever again

papermariocolorsplash1Whilst this is presumably not set in stone, Nintendo have decided that their Mario & Luigi series is their ONLY Mario RPG series. I can see why, but at the same time, this is like apples and pears. The two are similar but certainly not the same.

However, the point is that we are unlikely to ever see a genuine RPG like Thousand-Year Door again. They’ve said we could see an HD remake of the earlier games, but only if there’s demand. WHAT DO YOU MEAN IF THERE’S DEMAND?!

Honestly I’m actually offended by the whole thing. This has officially made me want to quit and just buy a PS4. Or an Xbox. Screw it.

Art Jam: Pokemon Sketches!

You know me, I love drawing stuff. So today I thought I’d draw some new pics of the new Pokemon recently revealed for Sun/Moon!

Grubbin

Grubbin

Of all the new Pokemon thus far, Grubbin is the one I’m probably least bothered about. It’s like of electricity sounds similar to Flabebe’s love of flowers. Just because they like it doesn’t mean they’ll be it.

Pikipek

Pikipek

I admit I kinda messed up the ink on this particular drawing. The legs came out all wrong.

Will admit that I like Pikipek out of all the three revealed so far, if only because I’ve been wanting a woodpecker Pokemon for quite some time.

Given that Grubbin may evolve into an Electric/Bug-type, what are the odds of this becoming a Grass/Flying type? because y’know, woodpecker.

Yungoos

Yungoos is one of those designs. I can see it definitely rubbing people the wrong way. I don’t particularly care about it either way, but I know of at least one person who loves it.

I did not do so well with the art on this one. Oh well.

And, to celebrate that I recently completed Kirby Planet Robobot’s various modes here’s the game’s super-secret final boss:

Galacta Knight

Hope you enjoyed my little creative show. See you next time!
